Horse bandages

Bandages for horses are generally made of an elastic fabric and their purpose is to protect the tendons and joints. They are applied like a medical bandage and prevent injury to the sensitive cannon bone. Bandages are an alternative to protective boots and they come in three categories: Exercise bandages, Stable bandages and Tail bandages.

It is very important to ensure that horse bandages are put on properly. The use of leg wraps made of foam or cotton is highly recommended in conjunction with elastic bandages, but not necessary when the bandages are made of wool or fleece. Gel pads are an alternative to leg wraps.

Novices should always ask an experienced rider for assistance when they start using horse bandages because of the high risk of injury to the horse associated with incorrect application. For example, bandages can constrict the lymph flow and circulation in the legs, especially if they are left on overnight.

When putting the horse bandages on, ensure that they extend from the coronet to the carpal joint and that the leg wrap doesn’t have any creases in it. If you use elastic bandages, don't wrap them too tightly around the joints. However, if you wrap them too loosely, you run the risk of the bandage coming off and the horse tripping over it. That’s why horse bandages should only be used by experienced riders. You can find a wide range of horse bandages and leg wraps in our online shop at horze.co.uk.
