Some Bit of Information…

There are many different types of bits out there. It is important to know which bit works best for your horse while in work.

Eggbutt and D-Ring Snaffle

The Eggbutt snaffle is a gentle bit on the horse’s mouth and it is very simple. This bit doesn’t pinch the side of the horse’s mouth when in work. The D-Ring Snaffle is similar to the Eggbutt Snaffle. The D-Ring Snaffle has a ring connection that is farther away from the horse’s lips then the other starter bits do. These bits also have the “D” rings where the bridle and reins connect to. They do have the nutcracker action when in a horse’s mouth.

Double Jointed Bits

The double jointed bits are close to the single jointed bits such as the D-Ring Snaffle, but have any extra joint that doesn’t have the nutcracker action in the horse’s mouth. The joint that is connecting in between the bit, creates more pressure than the single jointed bit. The middle piece creates pressure on the horse’s tongue creating more discomfort for the horse while being ridden.

Plastic and Copper Bits

Some of the plastic bits do have a flavor to them which horses love! It is a simple bit to use and horses enjoy the flavor. The copper bits make the horse create more saliva than other bits do while in work.

Multiple Ringed Bits and the Pelham Bits

The multiple ringed bits are used for easier control of the horse. You usually see them in show jumping. These bits are used by experienced riders because they can have the opposite effect on a horse if used improperly. Each of the rings has a different leverage on the horse depending on which ring you have the reins connected to. The Pelham bits are used from a transition of snaffles to curb bits or three ringed bits. They are not much of a harsh bit because they are a transition bit. You can see them in the Dressage ring or the show jumping ring.
